Biography

Robb Stark was sixteen when his father's arrest made him the head of House Stark, and he answered like a story made flesh: he called the banners, marched south, and proceeded to win every single battle he ever fought. At the Whispering Wood he shattered Jaime Lannister's host and took the Kingslayer captive with a fraction of the losses; the North and the Riverlands crowned him on the spot — the first King in the North in three hundred years. Tywin Lannister, the realm's most feared commander, never beat him in the field. Not once.

He lost the war everywhere else. He sent Theon Greyjoy to treat with the Iron Islands and got Winterfell burned for it. He executed Rickard Karstark for murdering captive boys — justice that cost him half his army. And he broke his marriage pact with Walder Frey for love of Talisa, a wound to Frey pride that Tywin's quill sharpened into a massacre. At the Twins, under the protection of guest right, the Rains of Castamere began to play: Talisa was stabbed through their unborn child, Catelyn's throat was cut, and Roose Bolton drove a dagger through the Young Wolf's heart with a personal message. The Freys sewed Grey Wind's head onto his corpse and paraded it — a desecration Arya Stark would repay in full, name by name.
