Biography
Ygritte was a spearwife of the free folk, born to the hard country beyond the Wall where no man kneels and no name is given that isn't earned. Captured by Jon Snow's ranging party, she should have died on his sword — and read in his hesitation everything she needed to know about him. Marched as his prisoner, she talked, taunted, and tested him into the truth, then led him into Mance Rayder's host when the capture reversed. Her refrain — 'You know nothing, Jon Snow' — began as mockery and ended as the truest sentence anyone ever said to him.
She was Jon's first love and the embodiment of the free folk's case against the south: fierce, unsentimental, and freer in a frozen wasteland than any kneeler in a castle. They broke his vows together in the grotto beneath the Wall; when he abandoned her to return to his Watch, the arrow she put in his back was both punishment and mercy — three arrows, none fatal, from the best archer in the host. At the Battle of Castle Black they met across the burning yard one last time. The boy Olly's arrow found her heart mid-hesitation, and she died in Jon's arms wishing they had never left the cave. Jon burned her beyond the Wall, in the free air she came from.
