Biography

The Night King was not born — he was made. Millennia before the series, as the First Men's invasion devastated the weirwood groves, the Children of the Forest seized a captive man, bound him to a heart tree, and drove a shard of dragonglass into his chest. They wanted a weapon against humanity; what they created was an extinction. The first White Walker turned on Children and men alike, and the war that followed — the Long Night, a generation of darkness — ended only when he was driven into the uttermost north and the Wall was raised, laced with magic, to hold him there for eight thousand years.

What returned in the series' opening scene was patience given form. He commanded through gesture alone: raising the dead of Hardhome in eerie silence as Jon Snow's boats pulled away, marking Bran Stark in a vision to break the magic of the Three-Eyed Raven's cave, spearing Viserion from the sky and raising the dragon as his own siege engine to bring down the Wall itself. His goal, as Bran framed it, was the murder of memory — to erase the world's record of itself by killing its living archive. He died feet from achieving it: in the godswood of Winterfell, his army victorious around him, his hand closing on Arya Stark's falling dagger an instant too late. When he shattered, every Walker and wight he had ever raised fell with him — eight thousand years of winter ending in a single drop of a knife.
