Biography

Cersei of House Lannister spent her whole life learning the lesson her father never meant to teach: that everything denied to her was given to lesser men. Married off to Robert Baratheon to seal the new regime, she endured a drunken king who whispered another woman's name on their wedding night — and answered with the most dangerous secret in Westeros, a lifelong incestuous love with her twin Jaime that fathered all three of her children. A woods witch's prophecy haunted her from childhood: queen she would be, until a younger, more beautiful queen cast her down — and gold shrouds for all three of her children.

The prophecy hunted her methodically. Joffrey poisoned at his own wedding. Myrcella poisoned in her arms at sea. Tommen stepping from a window after Cersei's wildfire masterstroke vaporized the Sept of Baelor with Margaery, the High Sparrow, and half the court inside it. By then she had endured the Walk of Atonement — stripped, shorn, and marched naked through the jeering capital — and the woman who climbed the steps of the Red Keep afterward had nothing left to lose and a throne with no one left to contest it. She crowned herself the first ruling Queen of the Andals in Westerosi history.

Her reign was siege warfare against arithmetic. She bought the Golden Company, lured Euron's fleet to her bed and her cause, and executed Missandei on the walls as her last negotiation. None of it mattered against dragons. As King's Landing burned, her armies dissolving, she walked down through the dying castle into Jaime's arms — and the twins who came into the world together left it together, beneath the collapsing crypts of the keep their family had schemed for decades to hold.
