Biography

Petyr Baelish came from nothing that mattered — a minor lord of the smallest holding on the smallest of the Fingers, fostered at Riverrun where he fell catastrophically in love with Catelyn Tully. When she was betrothed to Brandon Stark, the boy challenged a man twice his size to a duel and was opened from navel to collarbone for it. The scar taught him the lesson that built everything after: he would never win playing by the rules of men born above him. So he changed games. Money, information, and other people's appetites became his weapons; brothels and the realm's ledgers became his armory.

Littlefinger is the single most consequential schemer in the series — virtually every catastrophe traces to his hand. He convinced Lysa Arryn to poison her husband Jon Arryn and blame the Lannisters, the spark of the entire War of the Five Kings. He betrayed Ned Stark in the throne room with a dagger at his throat. He brokered the Tyrell alliance that won the Blackwater, orchestrated Joffrey's poisoning with Olenna Tyrell, spirited Sansa from the capital, pushed Lysa through the Moon Door, and sold Sansa to the Boltons while holding the Vale's army in reserve — arriving at the Battle of the Bastards as savior of the very family he had destroyed. He died of the one miscalculation his ledger couldn't cover: teaching Sansa Stark everything he knew. His final gambit — turning the Stark sisters against each other in Winterfell — collapsed when the sisters compared notes and Bran's omniscience supplied the evidence. Tried in the hall he schemed decades to rule, his every crime recited back to him, the man who began the War of the Five Kings ended on his knees, begging, before the dagger that started it all opened his throat.
