Biography

Varys was born a slave in Lyseni obscurity and mutilated as a boy by a sorcerer who burned his parts in a brazier — and heard a voice answer from the flames. The experience left him with a hatred of magic, a terror of fire, and an unmatched understanding of what desperation teaches: he survived the gutters of Myr and Pentos as a thief who stole letters instead of purses, discovering that information outvalues gold everywhere men have secrets. By the time Aerys II summoned him to Westeros, his network of 'little birds' — child informants threaded through every city of two continents — made him the best-informed man alive.

Across five kings he played the same long game he confessed only in riddles: he served not the throne but the realm, the millions who plant crops and pay the blood-price for highborn ambitions. He saved Tyrion twice — testifying nothing at his trial but arranging the crate to Pentos — and steered him to Daenerys, the ruler Varys had spent two decades positioning as the realm's best chance. 'Power resides where men believe it resides. It's a trick, a shadow on the wall.'

His principles finally cost what they had always threatened to. Watching Daenerys harden after Missandei's execution — and knowing now that Jon Snow's claim was better — Varys did what he had done under every monarch who failed his test: he began quietly working toward succession, writing letters about Jon's parentage. Tyrion informed the queen. On the shores of Dragonstone, the man who feared fire above all things removed his rings, met his oldest friend's eyes without rancor — 'I hope I deserve this. Truly, I do. I hope I'm wrong.' — and was unmade by the dragon he helped crown.
